Backstreet Boys address Denver Water viral parody advocating for conservation efforts

Denver Water, a city water service provider, recently released a viral video featuring a parody song by a group called the “Splashstreet Boys” that caught the attention of the popular 90s boy band, the Backstreet Boys. The song, titled “I Water That Way,” is a takeoff on the Backstreet Boys’ 1999 hit song “I Want it That Way.” The parody song’s chorus offers advice on following local watering rules, reminding people not to water when it’s raining or windy. The video received praise from the Backstreet Boys, who commended the group for their creative rendition.

The idea for the video came from Denver Water’s Jimmy Luthye, who had the idea a couple of years ago while listening to the radio. Luthye, who grew up loving boy band music, decided to see the idea through despite potential ridicule from others. The video was released on April 29 and coincided with the city’s summer watering restrictions, which began on the same day. The song’s lyrics also highlight the importance of not watering during the daytime when water is more likely to evaporate and promote the use of “Coloradoscape,” a climate-friendly landscaping option that conserves water.

The video editing helped blur some of the choreography’s shortcomings, but the public reception to the video has been overwhelmingly positive. The water utility company is considering releasing a follow-up video next year due to the video’s success. Fans have expressed their admiration for the creativity and humor of the video, with one YouTube user declaring their obsession with both the music video and the municipal infrastructure employees involved. Denver Water’s summer watering rules are emphasized in the song, and the company’s dedication to promoting water conservation through creative means has garnered widespread praise and attention.

Denver Water’s Jimmy Luthye expressed surprise at the video’s reception, noting that the group spent a relatively small amount of time practicing for the video. The project turned out to be a huge success, generating positive feedback and attention from the public. As summer officially starts on June 20, the video serves as a fun and engaging way to remind people of the importance of following watering rules and conserving water. The catchy parody song and entertaining video have successfully captured the public’s interest, showcasing the creative approach taken by Denver Water to promote water conservation in the community.
