Authorities say Parolee, suspected of murdering well-known NYC sneaker reseller, was identified in part by his distinctive footwear

Jayquan Straker, a parolee accused of killing popular sneaker reseller “Upscale Cracc’’ in SoHo in June, was identified through video evidence and his distinctive black and yellow sneakers. Straker had recently been released on parole after serving time for a home invasion burglary in Canarsie, Brooklyn, in which he and an accomplice dressed as FedEx employees and held a family at gunpoint. He was also arrested for illegal gun possession shortly after his release, but the outcome of that case is sealed.

Despite his criminal history and recent arrests, Straker was released back onto the streets and allegedly participated in the murder of Javier Osorio-Mejia, an entrepreneur known in sneaker circles in New York City. Video evidence from the murder scene in Manhattan showed Straker wearing the same black and yellow sneakers, linking him to the crime scene. He was arrested and charged with Osorio-Mejia’s murder, with his alleged accomplice still at large.

The suspects reportedly targeted Osorio-Mejia after following him from a strip club in Queens to SoHo, where they ambushed him as he exited his car to use the bathroom. Straker allegedly shot Osorio-Mejia and then robbed him of his Rolex and other belongings. The victim was believed to have been targeted due to the flashy jewelry he often wore in online photos. Straker was apprehended and is being held without bail.

Straker’s criminal history, including a violent home invasion and illegal gun possession, raises questions about the criminal justice system’s handling of repeat offenders. Despite being released on parole, Straker quickly became involved in illegal activities that ultimately led to a murder charge. The sealing of his previous weapons case records also adds a layer of complexity to his legal history and the potential failings of the justice system in monitoring and rehabilitating parolees.

The use of video evidence and social media presence in identifying and apprehending suspects highlights the evolving nature of criminal investigations. In this case, footage from the iCloud account of Straker and images of him wearing the distinctive sneakers played a critical role in tying him to the murder. The collaboration between law enforcement agencies and technology in solving crimes showcases the importance of utilizing all available resources in criminal investigations.

The tragic murder of Javier Osorio-Mejia sheds light on the dangers faced by individuals in high-profile industries, such as sneaker resale, where flashy displays of wealth can make them targets for criminals. The circumstances surrounding Osorio-Mejia’s death, including being followed and ambushed by his killers, serve as a stark reminder of the potential risks associated with public exposure and social media presence. The case also underscores the need for increased safety measures and vigilance among individuals in similar industries to protect themselves from potential threats.
