Authorities say California burglaries linked to South American theft ring used hidden cameras in shrubbery

Residents in Los Angeles County, California, are being warned about a growing trend in which South American individuals on limited visas are using hidden surveillance cameras to stake out potential burglary targets. The LA County Sheriff’s Office released images of the hidden cameras and battery packs that have been found in shrubs and gardens by local residents. These so-called South American Theft Groups (SATG) are typically composed of Chilean or Colombian nationals who are in the U.S. on limited tourist visas, and are considered highly organized criminal enterprises that travel from state to state to commit burglaries and thefts.

Officials have shared that the South American Theft Groups use tactics such as concealing surveillance devices in natural surroundings such as bushes and leaves in order to monitor homeowner activities and movements. These cameras are strategically placed in front or backyards, allowing the culprits to conduct real-time surveillance from remote locations. Prior to hiding the surveillance devices, the criminal organizations scout out optimal locations that have limited visibility, and then quickly deploy the cameras to minimize their chances of being seen by homeowners or law enforcement.

Residents are being advised to remain vigilant and on the lookout for any suspicious activity or unusual objects in their yards or bushes. The sheriff’s office suggests performing regular inspections of their property for signs of tampering or oddly placed objects. To further protect themselves, homeowners are encouraged to install motion-activated lights, perimeter fencing, or surveillance systems. If anything suspicious is found, residents are urged to report it to local law enforcement officials immediately, by calling 800-222-TIPS or visiting lacrimestoppers.org in LA County.

It is important for residents to be aware of the tactics used by these criminal organizations to prevent becoming victims of burglary or theft. By staying vigilant and inspecting their property regularly, homeowners can identify any suspicious behavior or hidden surveillance equipment. Installing security measures, such as motion-activated lights or surveillance systems, can also help to deter threats and protect against potential break-ins. Reporting any suspicious activity to law enforcement promptly can assist in preventing further criminal activity and safeguarding the community.

The use of hidden surveillance cameras by South American Theft Groups highlights the need for increased security measures and awareness among residents in Los Angeles County. These criminal organizations rely on technology to conduct real-time surveillance and monitor homeowner activities, making it essential for individuals to stay alert and proactive in protecting their property. By taking steps to secure their homes and report any suspicious behavior, residents can help prevent burglaries and thefts in their neighborhoods.

Law enforcement officials are urging residents to be proactive in safeguarding their homes by conducting regular property inspections and installing security measures such as motion-activated lights and surveillance systems. By remaining vigilant and reporting any suspicious activity to local authorities, residents can help prevent burglaries and safeguard their communities. The cooperation of community members and law enforcement is crucial in combating criminal activity and ensuring the safety of residents in Los Angeles County.
