Australian helicopter provokes response after near miss encounter with Chinese jet, according to China

China and Australia have had a recent incident involving a Chinese fighter jet and an Australian military helicopter over the Yellow Sea. Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles stated that the Chinese J-10 jet dropped flares above and in front of the Australian MH60R Seahawk helicopter. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the incident “unacceptable”, and stated that the Australian personnel were operating in international airspace while enforcing sanctions against North Korea. China’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, accused Australia of deliberately flying close to Chinese airspace in a “provocative move” that endangered maritime air security. China has lodged protests with Australia over the incident and urged them to stop such provocations.

This incident comes at a time when China and Australia are trying to rebuild their strained relationship following disputes over the origins of COVID-19 and trade barriers imposed by Beijing in response to calls for an independent investigation. The altercation over the Yellow Sea could potentially create a new rift between the two nations. The confrontation took place during a routine operation to enforce sanctions against North Korea. The Australian helicopter, flying from the destroyer HMAS Hobart, dodged the flares launched by the Chinese fighter jet. This is not the first time China has been accused of unsafe behavior in international airspace, as countries like Canada and the United States have also reported similar incidents.

The incident involving the Chinese fighter jet and Australian military helicopter is just one of several incidents in recent years that have strained the relationship between the two countries. In 2022, Australia protested after a Chinese navy vessel pointed a laser at an Australian military aircraft near Australia’s northern coast. Similarly, in another incident in 2022, a Chinese fighter aircraft dangerously intercepted an Australian military surveillance plane in the South China Sea. China has denied using its sonar to injure Australian divers in Japanese waters, and has also been accused of using dangerous tactics at sea. The growing tensions between China and Australia have resulted in multiple confrontations, despite efforts to improve relations.

China’s claims of sovereignty over the South China Sea have further escalated tensions with neighboring countries like the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. An international tribunal in 2016 ruled that China’s expansive claim over the South China Sea had no legal basis. Chinese navy vessels have been monitored off Australia’s coast during joint military exercises with the US. Australia has reiterated its commitment to respecting the freedom of navigation and overflight for all states in accordance with international law. The recent incident over the Yellow Sea adds to the ongoing disputes between China and Australia and highlights the challenges in rebuilding their relationship.

The incident involving the Chinese fighter jet and Australian military helicopter over the Yellow Sea has sparked concerns about the security and safety of operations in international airspace. China and Australia have been involved in multiple confrontations in recent years, including incidents at sea and in the air. The growing tensions between the two countries, exacerbated by territorial disputes in the South China Sea, have made it challenging to rebuild their strained relationship. As the two nations try to improve ties, incidents like the one over the Yellow Sea underscore the complexities and risks involved in managing such interactions in a volatile geopolitical environment. Both China and Australia have made strong statements condemning each other’s actions and urging for a resolution to prevent further misunderstandings and miscalculations in the future.
