Attracting Indian Travelers: A Thai Resort’s Strategy – Report from India

Thailand continues to be a popular destination for Indian tourists, with Bangkok and Phuket being the most commonly visited places. However, smaller resorts and businesses in other areas such as Krabi province are now trying to attract Indian tourists. Pimalai Resort and Spa, located in Krabi, is one such place that is looking to cater to Indian travelers. Despite Thailand being a top destination for Indian travelers, lesser-known places like Ko Lanta are missing out on Indian tourists due to a lack of communication and inconvenience of direct flights to the area.

Thailand is among the top travel destinations for Indians, with Bangkok consistently ranking as a favorite destination for international travel. Studies have shown that Bangkok is one of the most popular international destinations among Indian travelers. However, Pimalai Resort, located in Krabi, is often overlooked by Indian tourists due to lack of awareness. The resort, which offers a private beach experience and sustainable, family-owned accommodations, caters to the preferences of Indian travelers who are seeking unique and sustainable stays.

After the Covid pandemic, Pimalai Resort did not actively reach out to Indian travelers, leading to a decline in Indian visitors. Most Indian travelers tend to choose destinations like Phuket or Bangkok for their visits, but there is a growing trend of repeat visitors seeking new destinations in Thailand. Indian travelers are now looking to explore other areas beyond Bangkok and Phuket, giving hope to places like Krabi and Ko Lanta. Direct flights to Krabi could potentially increase the number of Indian tourists visiting the region.

Meanwhile, Air India Express had faced operational issues due to mass sick leaves by its cabin crew, resulting in the cancellation of over 80 flights. However, the issues have since been resolved, and the services are expected to stabilize by Tuesday. In another development, Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) is partnering with Nepal-based CG Hospitality to expand its presence in the Indian subcontinent. The collaboration aims to grow the IHCL portfolio to 25 hotels by 2025, with a focus on regions around the Himalayas and the Indian Ocean.

SpiceJet, a budget carrier, has announced daily direct flights between Delhi and Phuket, marking its entry into the popular Thai destination. The announcement comes after other Indian airlines such as IndiGo and Air India revealed plans to increase their frequency of flights to Phuket. This move aligns with Thailand’s decision to extend visa-free travel for Indians, making it easier for Indian tourists to visit the country. With more airlines offering direct flights to Phuket and other regions in Thailand, it is expected that Indian tourism to Thailand will continue to grow in the coming years.
