In the early 2000s, San Antonio, Texas was home to some of the best WNBA basketball in the nation with teams like the Houston Comets, Dallas Wings, and San Antonio Stars serving as powerful examples of athleticism, teamwork, and women breaking barriers. However, within 15 years, the Comets folded and the Stars relocated to Las Vegas. This change left a void in the region and for fans like the author who grew up watching these teams play.

Years later, the author found themselves in New York City, attending a New York Liberty game after participating in a Pride League event. The sense of community and inclusivity at the game was palpable, with many queer basketball fans in attendance. This experience made the author realize the importance of having a space where the community could come together to collectively dream and find hope, especially in a time where hope feels uncertain.

Wanting to continue being a part of this inclusive community, the author decided to attend all 40 regular season New York Liberty games as a way to visit all 12 WNBA stadiums. They invited friends to join them in witnessing history and the resilience of the players on the court. In a time of disconnect and apathy, being a fan and showing up consistently as one’s true self is a powerful statement that can make a difference in the world.

As a part of this fandom, the author began documenting the people who make up the community surrounding women’s basketball, focusing on what they were wearing. They interviewed hundreds of New York Liberty and WNBA fans from different cities across the country to gain insights into the passion and dedication of the fanbase. The author plans to compile these stories and photos into a photo book that celebrates the diversity and camaraderie within the women’s basketball community.

Through their interactions with fans and players, the author realized the impact that being a fan can have on both individuals and communities. By showing up and supporting the players, fans are contributing to the narrative of women’s basketball and advocating for equality and representation in sports. The author’s journey to attend every WNBA game and document the community is a testament to the power of fandom in creating connections and promoting positive change.

In a time of uncertainty and division, being a fan of women’s basketball and showing unwavering support for the players is a form of activism and resistance. By celebrating the diversity and resilience of the women in the league, fans are pushing for a more inclusive and equal society. The author’s dedication to attending all 40 New York Liberty games and documenting the fan community highlights the importance of coming together to support a common cause and inspire hope for a better future.
