As UAE Alcohol Laws Relax, Abu Dhabi Welcomes Its First Brewery in Previously Untapped Desert City

Abu Dhabi has recently undergone a significant change in its alcohol policies, allowing for the establishment of micro and craft breweries in the city. This shift in regulations has opened up new opportunities for entrepreneurs like Chad McGehee, who opened Side Hustle Brews and Spirits, a brewery and distillery with a unique Abu Dhabi branding. Despite the initial challenges of navigating the regulations around alcohol production in the country, McGehee’s dream of brewing IPAs in Arabia has finally become a reality, with Side Hustle being the first of its kind in the region.

While neighboring emirates like Dubai have long been known for their vibrant nightlife and abundance of bars and clubs, Abu Dhabi has been considered more conservative when it comes to alcohol consumption. However, the recent changes in policies in Abu Dhabi have led to the elimination of licensing requirements for alcohol purchases, making it easier for both locals and tourists to enjoy alcoholic beverages in the city. This move is seen as a step towards promoting tourism and boosting sales during the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite the relaxing of alcohol policies, Abu Dhabi still maintains strict regulations against drunken driving and public intoxication, as alcohol consumption is considered forbidden in Islam. However, alcohol sales have been a significant source of revenue for the UAE, with Dubai Duty Free selling millions of cans of beer and bottles of liquor each year. The lack of local equipment for breweries in the UAE has led entrepreneurs like McGehee to import everything, creating an opportunity for innovative businesses like Side Hustle to cater to a diverse international customer base.

Craft, the brew pub partner of Side Hustle, offers a variety of beers on tap, with names that reflect the unique cultural aspects of the UAE. The brewery sources ingredients from various countries, catering to the diverse palates of the multicultural population of Abu Dhabi. With plans to brew up to 100 different beers by the end of the year, Side Hustle aims to become a favorite destination for beer enthusiasts from around the world. The growth of the craft brewing industry in Abu Dhabi reflects the city’s evolving stance on alcohol and its commitment to promoting entrepreneurship and tourism.

Overall, the transition towards a more relaxed alcohol policy in Abu Dhabi signals a shift towards a more diverse and inclusive society. The opening of micro and craft breweries in the city not only offers new experiences for residents and tourists but also provides opportunities for entrepreneurs to showcase their creativity and innovation. As the UAE continues to pave the way for progressive changes, businesses like Side Hustle Brews and Spirits are at the forefront of shaping the cultural landscape of Abu Dhabi and offering a taste of global beer culture to the local community.
