As technology advances and prices drop, TV screens are getting bigger

Television viewers are opting for larger screens this holiday season, with manufacturers and retailers introducing more XXL screens measuring over 8 feet diagonally. These supersize televisions accounted for 1.7% of TV sales revenue in the U.S. during the first nine months of the year, but the demand for ultra-large screens is on the rise, with sales of TVs at least 97 inches growing tenfold from last year. Best Buy has doubled its assortment of hefty TVs and introduced displays in 70% of its stores to cater to this trend.

The increased demand for large TVs can be attributed to improved technology and lower prices. The average price for TVs over 97 inches has decreased significantly this year, making them more accessible to consumers. Factors like the amount of time spent on smartphones and tablets, as well as the desire for a better TV viewing experience, are also driving the growth of widescreen TVs. Consumer Technology Association reports that people tend to choose larger TVs when making a purchase, with the size of flat-panel TVs shipped to retailers increasing by an average of one inch per year.

Manufacturers like Samsung are introducing new features in their larger TV models to enhance the viewing experience. These features include components that analyze the content being watched to improve sharpness and reduce noise across every scene. Retailers like Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Abt Electronics are expanding their TV ranges to meet the demand for supersize screens, which are starting to compete with home theater projectors in terms of providing a cinematic viewing experience from the comfort of home.

The buyers interested in trading up to these larger TVs come from various age groups, including millennials, Generation X, and Gen Z. While the demand for supersize TVs is growing, it is still considered a niche market due to space constraints in many households. Consumers looking to purchase a 98-inch TV should consider factors like delivery and installation logistics, as well as the recommended viewing distance. With the advancement in technology and decreasing prices, the trend towards larger TVs is expected to continue, with the possibility of even bigger screens entering the market in the future.

Overall, the demand for supersize TVs is increasing, with consumers looking for a better viewing experience and the ability to host watch parties or create a cinematic setting at home. As technology continues to improve and prices become more affordable, the trend towards larger TVs is expected to grow. Retailers are expanding their TV ranges to meet this demand, and manufacturers are introducing new features to enhance the viewing experience on these ultra-large screens. The future of the TV market seems to be heading towards bigger and better screens for an immersive entertainment experience at home.
