As Students Return, Columbia University Takes Precautions for Potential Antisemitic Protests by Locking Down Campus

Columbia University in New York City is taking steps to ensure the safety of its campus and students in response to antisemitic protests that occurred in the spring of 2024. The protests culminated in police storming a barricaded building to remove anti-Israel agitators, resulting in dozens of arrests at Hamilton Hall and City College of New York. Almost half of the suspects were non-students, and demonstrators had engaged in destructive behavior such as smashing windows and blocking doors. In response to potential disruptions at Columbia and other college campuses, the university has implemented a lockdown policy to keep out “non-affiliates” with bad intentions. This change restricts access to the campus through several checkpoints and limits entrances and exits, with the rules taking effect indefinitely.

The lockdown policy at Columbia University includes color-coded rules that dictate the degree of public access to the campus. Under green rules, the outdoor campus is open to everyone, but a university ID is required for building access. Yellow rules allow public access but with restrictions on certain entrances and exits. Red rules prohibit guest access entirely, limiting entry to students living on campus and essential staff. Following protests targeting Jewish students and the Israeli counteroffensive in Gaza, the university is exploring security enhancements. This includes potential additions of peace officers with arrest powers to the public safety department to improve de-escalation techniques and incident management.

University spokespersons have emphasized a commitment to the safety and well-being of the entire university community, acknowledging past challenges and planning for the future. The administration faced criticism over its response to agitators who engaged in antisemitic behavior and confrontations, leading to the removal of three senior staff members accused of sharing antisemitic text messages. The school’s leadership is considering ways to strengthen the public safety department’s capabilities while reducing reliance on the NYPD. This includes exploring options to supplement the department with personnel trained in de-escalation and incident management, potentially including peace officers with arrest powers.

The implementation of the lockdown policy is aimed at maintaining a safe environment for the Columbia University community and preventing potential disruptions from non-affiliates with harmful intentions. By restricting campus access through checkpoints and limiting entrances and exits, the university seeks to mitigate security risks. The response to past protests and incidents involving antisemitism has prompted a reassessment of security measures and an emphasis on enhancing public safety capabilities. This includes exploring the addition of peace officers with arrest powers to the public safety department, with a focus on training in de-escalation techniques.

The decision to implement a lockdown policy follows a series of antisemitic protests and incidents at Columbia University that prompted police intervention and arrests. The school’s response to the protests, which involved aggressive behavior and confrontations, led to criticism and calls for improved security measures. The university is taking steps to address these concerns by enhancing public safety capabilities and exploring the addition of peace officers with arrest powers to the campus security team. This approach aims to strengthen incident management and de-escalation techniques to ensure the safety and well-being of the university community.

As Columbia University prepares for the fall 2024 semester, the lockdown policy remains in effect to safeguard the campus and students from potential disruptions by non-affiliates with harmful intentions. The university’s response to antisemitic protests in the spring, which involved police intervention and arrests, has prompted a reevaluation of security measures and a focus on enhancing public safety capabilities. By exploring the addition of peace officers with arrest powers to the public safety department, the university aims to strengthen incident management and de-escalation techniques. This approach reflects an ongoing commitment to the safety and well-being of the entire university community.
