As a dietitian, here’s how you can eat healthy at McDonald’s while losing weight

When it comes to trying to lose weight, fast food might seem like the enemy, but in reality, it is possible to make healthier choices while still dining out at popular chains like McDonald’s. Opting for lean proteins, veggies, and avoiding overeating are key rules to follow when ordering fast food. By following these guidelines, it is possible to make sensible choices even at fast food restaurants like McDonald’s.

Dietitian Kristen Carli provided her go-to lunch order for weight loss at McDonald’s, consisting of a Classic Burger with apple slices and unsweetened iced tea. She explains that choosing a basic burger provides protein and carbohydrates without unnecessary calories from cheese or mayo. The addition of apple slices as a side adds fiber and natural sweetness without added sugars or fat, while unsweet tea keeps the drink calorie-free and helps with hydration. This combination of protein, carbohydrates, and fiber can help keep you satisfied while managing calorie intake.

The meal Carli recommends comes in at just 250 calories and provides 12 grams of protein, which is essential for weight loss. Protein is known to fill you up and prevent snacking between meals. By opting for apple slices instead of fries and unsweet tea instead of soda, this meal is a balanced and healthy choice at McDonald’s. It is important not to load up the burger with cheese and mayo, sticking instead to toppings like onions, pickles, and ketchup to keep the meal lower in calories.

Overall, making smart choices when ordering at McDonald’s or other fast-food restaurants is possible with some knowledge and planning. By selecting options like lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and avoiding high-calorie condiments and drinks, it is possible to enjoy a satisfying meal while still working towards weight loss goals. Being mindful of portion sizes and making substitutions like apple slices instead of fries can make a significant difference in the calorie content of your meal. With some thought and awareness, it is possible to dine out at fast-food restaurants while still making healthy choices.
