Arrowhead scrambles as Sony halts sales of ‘Helldivers 2’ in 177 regions

Sony has faced backlash for its plan to require all Helldivers 2 PC players to link a PSN account, leading to the game being removed from sale in 177 regions where it’s not possible to create a PSN account. Arrowhead, the developer of the game, has urged players to review bomb the game in protest, resulting in hundreds of thousands of negative reviews. CEO Johan Pilestedt has admitted that they disabled account linking at launch due to technical issues, but failed to inform players that it would be mandatory down the line.

Despite Arrowhead clarifying that the PSN linking mandate is coming from Sony, both companies have been criticized for their lack of communication and handling of the situation. Pilestedt has mentioned that they are working with Sony on finding solutions, but does not have the final say in the matter. The community is anxiously waiting to see how this situation will unfold, as players in the affected regions face the possibility of losing access to a game they have invested time and money into.

The decision to require PSN account linking has been met with skepticism, with some speculating that Sony’s motive is to detect and ban cheaters, while others believe it’s a tactic to boost PSN account numbers and collect data from Steam Helldivers players. The controversy has overshadowed the success of the live game and tarnished Sony’s reputation. Many believe that the situation could have been handled better, and are calling for Sony to reconsider their decision and allow players in non-PSN regions to continue enjoying the game.

As rumors and theories circulate about the true intentions behind the PSN linking requirement, the focus remains on the players in the affected regions who are facing uncertainty about the future of their gaming experience. Arrowhead’s transparency about their opposition to the mandate highlights the friction between the developer and Sony, raising questions about the impact of this decision on the gaming community as a whole. It remains to be seen how Sony and Arrowhead will address the fallout from this controversy and whether a resolution will be reached to satisfy all parties involved.

Despite the chaos surrounding the PSN linking requirement, Pilestedt and Arrowhead remain hopeful that a solution will be reached to prevent players from losing access to the game. The situation is evolving rapidly, with updates and developments occurring by the hour. As players and fans wait for a resolution, the fallout from this controversy serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of clear communication and understanding the implications of decisions that affect the gaming community. Stay tuned for further updates on this unfolding story.
