Divers have recovered a fifth body from the wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, following a tragic accident involving a container ship that caused the bridge to collapse on Mar. 26. The victim, identified as Miguel Angel Luna Gonzalez, was found after salvage teams located a missing construction vehicle in the Patapsco River. The recovery efforts were assisted by multiple agencies, including the Maryland State Police Department’s underwater recovery team and the FBI.

The Key Bridge Response Unified Command expressed their dedication to ongoing recovery operations and extended condolences to the families of the victims. Colonel Roland L. Butler, Jr., the Superintendent of the Maryland Department of State Police, emphasized the importance of supporting those who have lost loved ones in the tragedy. The recovery of Gonzalez’s body comes weeks after the initial incident, in which six workers lost their lives as a result of the bridge collapse caused by the Dali container ship.

Following the recent recovery of a fourth body on April 15, the search efforts have continued to locate missing individuals from the accident. Despite the tragic loss of lives, the Unified Command remains committed to the recovery operation, acknowledging that each missing individual is someone’s beloved friend or family member. The workers involved in the accident were presumed dead shortly after the collapse, and efforts to locate and recover their bodies have been ongoing since then.

The discovery of Gonzalez’s body brings closure to his family and loved ones, as well as providing crucial information to investigators regarding the circumstances of the accident. The recovery process has been a collaborative effort involving various agencies and departments, demonstrating the importance of teamwork in crisis situations. The marine salvage teams and divers have worked tirelessly to retrieve the victims and salvage any vehicles or debris from the river since the initial incident in March.

As the recovery operation continues, the Unified Command and other authorities are focused on supporting the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time. The tragedies surrounding the Key Bridge collapse have deeply impacted the community and raised questions about safety protocols and procedures for similar construction projects in the future. However, the ongoing recovery efforts serve as a reminder of the resilience and unity shown in the face of adversity, highlighting the importance of coming together to provide support and closure to those affected by the accident.
