Anonymous WNBA GMs scout guard prospects, predict that Caitlin Clark will be the “backbone of a franchise”

The 2024 WNBA Draft is fast approaching, and Caitlin Clark is set to be the headline player. However, she is just one of many impact guards who will be entering the league, as teams look to add more playmakers on the perimeter to enhance their offenses. Alongside Clark, there is a deep class of shooters, pure points, and combo guards, including international prospects, who are eager to make their mark at the professional level. The draft is set to take place on April 15 in Brooklyn, N.Y., just eight days after the national championship game.

Leading up to the draft, eight WNBA general managers have shared their thoughts on the upcoming draft class with The Athletic. They were given anonymity to speak openly about the players. The next installment will focus on frontcourt players like Cameron Brink, Kamilla Cardoso, and Angel Reese. After the NCAA Tournament, a final mock draft and a GM scout of potential picks in the 2025 WNBA Draft will be released.

Among the standout guards in the draft class is Georgia Amoore, who is praised for her ability to run a team efficiently and stretch the floor. Her size is a concern for some, but many see her as a safe pick with the potential to excel as a backup point guard in the league. Isobel Borlase, a guard from the Adelaide Lightning in Australia, is noted for her scoring ability and international experience but questions remain about how her game will translate to the WNBA.

Caitlin Clark, the standout guard from Iowa, is widely regarded as a generational talent and a clear top pick in the draft. Her offensive skills and passing ability are highlighted as strengths that will benefit any team that selects her. Other international prospects like Leila Lacan and Carla Leite are also on the radar of WNBA teams, with their unique skills and potential to contribute at the professional level.

Players like Jacy Sheldon, Jaylyn Sherrod, and Hailey Van Lith are also viewed as promising guards in the draft class. Sheldon’s athleticism and passing ability are praised, while Sherrod is commended for her defensive skills and toughness. Van Lith, known for her outside shooting and competitiveness, is compared to Dana Evans but faces questions about her effectiveness as a point guard. As the draft approaches, teams are evaluating a range of guards with different skill sets and potential impact in the WNBA.
