In 2024, Ford Motor Company claimed to have sold the most popular vehicle in the U.S., the Ford F-Series, marking the 48th consecutive year that the truck has held the crown as America’s best-selling truck. The Ford F-Series brand includes a range of trucks, from the F-150 to the Super Duty work specialists. The company’s Ford brand has sold over 33 million F-Series trucks since 1977, showcasing their long-standing success in the market. The F-Series lineup now includes the Ford F-150, which recently entered a new generation and is available as a hybrid, as well as the all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning and the off-roading specialist Ford F-150 Raptor.
Despite facing stiff competition from General Motors, Ford maintained its position as the top-selling truck brand in the U.S. Ford thanked its loyal customers for their continued support, emphasizing their commitment to innovation and the diversity of Powertrain offerings for customers. General Motors reported that it was America’s top full-size truck seller by the end of the third quarter, with its Chevrolet and GMC brands making significant gains in the market. Chevrolet introduced a new, less expensive version of its Silverado EV pickup, while GMC increased market share by selling its high-cost Sierra models to over 50 percent of customers.
Ram truck sales were down 19 percent year-over-year as of Q3, with its parent company Stellantis experiencing sales struggles following executive changes. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares resigned ahead of his planned 2026 exit, leading to the appointment of a new brand head for Ram trucks, Tim Kuniskis. Ram announced changes to its product lineup, including pushing up the launch timing of the Ramcharger pickup truck and delaying the launch of the Ram 1500 REV battery-electric truck. Despite these challenges, Ram continues to be a significant player in the truck market.
In addition to Ford trucks, other popular vehicles in the U.S. in 2024 included the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, as well as various models from Toyota, Honda, and Hyundai. The Ford Explorer and Ford Maverick were also highlighted as hot sellers during the year. Full-year earnings results for most automakers are expected in the first quarter of 2025, with final 2024 sales figures for each brand set to be revealed ahead of those earnings reports. The competition among automakers remains fierce, with companies vying for market share and introducing new models to attract customers. Ford’s continued success with the F-Series trucks demonstrates the brand’s enduring appeal and commitment to innovation in the truck market.
