The Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing unit has announced plans to invest $11 billion in building a data center in northern Indiana, creating at least 1,000 new jobs. This project, near the town of New Carlisle, will be the largest capital investment in Indiana’s history, according to Governor Eric Holcomb. The data center will be located at the Indiana Enterprise Center, just east of New Carlisle, and will serve as a major employment center for northern Indiana over the next decade.

The AWS data center in Indiana will house computer servers, data storage drives, networking equipment, and other technology infrastructure used for cloud computing and artificial intelligence technologies. Roger Wehner, AWS director of economic development, highlighted the job opportunities that will be created by this project and emphasized the contribution it will make to Indiana’s tech sector and economy. The Indiana Economic Development Corp. has committed to providing data center sales tax exemptions and various performance-based tax credits to support the AWS data center plans.

The Indiana data center will tap into the state’s growing economy and tech sector, providing a boost to the region’s technology infrastructure and job market. The investment by AWS represents a significant commitment to the state’s future development and will have a positive ripple effect on New Carlisle, the north central region, and the state of Indiana. The company’s planned investment, along with the tax exemptions and credits provided by IEDC, demonstrate a strong partnership between the private sector and the state government to drive economic growth in Indiana.

AWS has also pledged to contribute $7 million to support road infrastructure improvements along State Road 2, surrounding the planned data center campus. This investment in infrastructure will not only benefit the company’s operations but also enhance transportation connectivity in the area, providing long-term benefits to the local community. The data center project is expected to create a long-lasting impact, generating economic opportunities and technological advancements that will position Indiana as a leader in the digital economy.

Overall, the AWS data center project in northern Indiana represents a significant milestone in the state’s economic development, with the potential to transform the region into a hub for cloud computing and artificial intelligence technologies. The partnership between AWS and the state government, along with the support from local officials and community leaders, will pave the way for job creation, innovation, and economic prosperity in the years to come. This landmark investment underscores Indiana’s commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment and leveraging technology to drive growth and opportunity for its residents.
