Amazon Fresh slashes grocery prices by up to 30% to lure back customers hit by inflation

Amazon is following in the footsteps of major retailers such as Target and Walmart by reducing prices at its Amazon Fresh grocery stores. The company announced that it will slash prices by up to 30% on 4,000 items available online as well as at its brick-and-mortar locations. Customers can expect discounts on a variety of products, including meat, seafood, frozen food, dairy, beverages, snacks, and pastas. These price reductions will apply to both national brands and Amazon-owned private label products.

In addition to the overall price cuts, Amazon Prime members will receive an additional 10% off the discounted items from Amazon Fresh. Claire Peters, worldwide vice president with Amazon Fresh, stated that the company is focused on investing in competitive pricing and savings for all customers, both in-store and online. The news of the price reductions was first reported by CNN over the weekend, and The Post has reached out to Amazon for further comments.

Target also recently announced its plans to lower prices on over 5,000 of its most frequently purchased items, such as meat, milk, soda, bread, fruits, vegetables, coffee, diapers, paper towels, and pet food. This move follows Walmart’s commitment earlier this year to reduce prices on items like eggs, apples, and deli snacks, as part of what the retailer called a “deflationary environment.” The surge in food inflation in recent years has impacted Americans, with Memorial Day cookout costs rising by 10% compared to the previous year. Overall, inflation was 3.4% higher year-over-year in April, while grocery prices were 2.2% more expensive than in 2023.

Since January 2021, grocery prices have increased by over 21%, leading to significant financial strain on households. Amazon’s decision to reduce prices at its Amazon Fresh stores may provide some relief to consumers facing rising grocery costs. By offering discounts on a wide range of products, including popular grocery items, Amazon is aiming to attract inflation-weary customers and stay competitive in the market. The additional 10% discount for Prime members further incentivizes shoppers to take advantage of the reduced prices at Amazon Fresh locations, both online and in-store. With other major retailers also focusing on lowering prices, the competition to offer affordable grocery options is intensifying in response to ongoing inflation concerns.
