Two armed robberies targeting UPS and Amazon trucks occurred just 30 minutes apart in southeast Washington, D.C. The Metropolitan Police Department reported an armed robbery of a UPS truck driver in the 1000 block of Cook Drive Southeast, followed by another armed robbery of an Amazon truck driver in the 800 block of Cook Drive Southeast. President and CEO of Metropolitan Protective Services Derrick Parks noted that there has been a recent increase in armed vehicle robberies in the area, including robberies targeting delivery truck drivers specifically.
Parks stated that overall crime related to robberies, carjackings, and theft from vehicles has been on the rise in the area. He emphasized that delivery drivers seem to be prime targets for these crimes. The incidents in Washington, D.C., are part of a larger trend of delivery truck drivers falling victim to robberies in recent months. In November, an Amazon delivery driver was carjacked in the city, and in February, police released surveillance images after alcohol was stolen from the back of a delivery truck. In a separate incident in nearby Prince George’s County, Maryland, a UPS driver’s truck was stolen by thieves.
According to Parks, crime occurs when there are three elements present – motive, means, and opportunity. To combat these crimes, one or more of these elements must be eliminated. He stressed the importance of finding ways to reduce opportunities for criminals to target delivery trucks and their drivers.
