Adam Selipsky, CEO of Amazon’s cloud computing business, has announced that he will be stepping down from his role next month. In his place, Matt Garman, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Amazon Web Services, will succeed Selipsky after his departure on June 3. Selipsky stated in a memo to employees that he is leaving AWS after about 14 years to spend more time with his family, expressing confidence in the future of the cloud business. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy praised Selipsky’s leadership and noted that Garman has the necessary skills and experience for his new role.

Selipsky mentioned that the current state of the business and leadership team makes it an appropriate time for him to make this transition and focus on spending more time with his family, recharging, and reflecting on the future. He highlighted the bright future ahead for AWS and thanked the employees for their contributions to the company’s success. Jassy echoed Selipsky’s sentiment, praising his leadership abilities and expressing confidence in Garman as the incoming CEO. The transition comes at a pivotal moment for AWS, as the demand for cloud services continues to grow rapidly.

Many had speculated in 2021 that Garman would succeed Jassy as the head of AWS after Jassy was announced as the new Amazon CEO. However, Amazon ultimately chose Selipsky, who was then the CEO of Salesforce-owned data visualization software maker Tableau, for the role. Selipsky’s departure marks the end of his long tenure at AWS, during which he played a key role in driving the growth and success of the cloud business. Garman, with his strong background in sales and marketing, is expected to step into the role smoothly and continue the momentum that Selipsky has built over the years.

The announcement of Selipsky’s departure comes amidst a period of significant growth and expansion for AWS, as more organizations turn to cloud services for their computing needs. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of cloud technologies, driving increased demand for AWS’ services. As organizations continue to embrace digital transformation and cloud computing, AWS remains a key player in the market, providing a wide range of services and solutions to meet the evolving needs of customers.

Selipsky’s decision to step down reflects a personal choice to prioritize time with his family and take a break to rejuvenate and reflect on his future. His contributions to AWS have been instrumental in shaping the company into a leading cloud computing provider, and his legacy will continue to have a lasting impact on the business. As Garman prepares to take on the role of CEO, he will inherit a strong foundation set by Selipsky and will work to continue driving innovation and growth in the highly competitive cloud computing market. With Selipsky’s guidance and leadership, AWS has solidified its position as a dominant force in the industry, and the company looks forward to continuing its success under Garman’s leadership.
