Aaron Wood pledges millions to rejuvenate high streets

Wood expressed concern over the mismanagement of ratepayer money in the past, citing examples of wasteful spending such as the installation and removal of green astro turf and street furniture on Elizabeth Street. He emphasized the importance of working closely with businesses in order to avoid similar mistakes in the future. Sam Di Nucci, a newsagent on Errol Street, highlighted the challenges faced by businesses in the area, with trade significantly down and the street appearing run-down. He called for improvements such as better lighting, trees, and flower pots to enhance the appeal of the street.

Di Nucci attributed the decline in business to the absence of office workers returning to nearby offices after lockdown, acknowledging that this issue may be beyond the lord mayor’s control. In Lygon Street, traders have raised concerns about high crime levels and have requested the installation of security cameras by the City of Melbourne. While the $28 million investment does not specifically include security cameras, Wood assured that the city’s safety policy would address public safety measures such as CCTV and collaboration with Victoria Police. Lord Mayor Nick Reece has promised to install an additional 200 security cameras across Melbourne if he wins the mayoral election.

The upcoming mayoral election will give voters the opportunity to choose the candidate they believe will best address the issues facing Melbourne’s business districts and ensure the safety and prosperity of its residents. Voting packs, including ballot papers and candidate statements, will be mailed out next week, with votes required to be posted by October 25 to be counted. Reece’s proposal to increase security cameras has sparked discussion around public safety measures and the importance of addressing crime levels in commercial areas. Wood’s focus on collaboration with businesses and responsible spending underscore the need for effective leadership in addressing the challenges faced by local traders.

Overall, the issues facing commercial precincts such as Elizabeth Street, Errol Street, and Lygon Street highlight the importance of effective urban planning, public safety measures, and support for local businesses. The upcoming mayoral election represents an opportunity for voters to voice their concerns and choose a candidate who will prioritize the needs of the community and work towards revitalizing business districts. Collaboration between local government, businesses, and law enforcement will be essential in addressing the challenges faced by traders and ensuring the ongoing success and vibrancy of Melbourne’s commercial areas.
