Kristie Pereira was shocked to discover her puppy Beau up for adoption at a pet rescue organization after she had euthanized him due to severe health issues. She had adopted Beau from Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation in Maryland and had quickly formed a strong bond with him. Pereira paid $15 to have Beau euthanized at Montgomery County Animal Services in Maryland in March 2023. However, during a visit back to Maryland, she discovered Beau’s photo on the rescue organization’s website under the name Amos Hart, indicating that he was still alive. The shelter confirmed that veterinarians had found no neurological issues with Beau and had diagnosed and treated a liver problem through a successful $7,000 surgery, which was funded through a GoFundMe campaign. Despite the positive outcome, Pereira was unaware of Beau’s continued existence and was willing to pay the $7,000 cost to get him back.
Despite Pereira’s willingness to pay for Beau’s care, the rescue organization refused to return the dog to her. A spokesperson for Lost Dog & Cat Rescue stated that their policy is not to re-home surrendered dogs with their former owners and emphasized their mission to save adoptable dogs from euthanasia. The rescue organization defended their decision not to return Beau to Pereira, claiming she did not consent to extensive testing for neurological issues and did not allow for Beau to be euthanized in her presence.
Caroline Hairfield, the executive director of Montgomery County Animal Services, explained that they are obligated by contract to return surrendered animals to the rescue organization, leaving the decision of Beau’s return to Pereira up to the organization. Despite the ongoing dispute, the dog remained available for adoption on the rescue’s website, with no resolution in sight.
