A retired lawmaker from a Montana ranch seeks comeback in crowded House race

Former U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg, a six-term Montana lawmaker, is making an unlikely political comeback in a crowded field for an open seat. Despite raising little money and skipping important events, he is determined to re-enter the political arena. Rehberg’s opponents suggest his time has passed, but he remains motivated by his grandchildren and the desire to make a difference in their lives. He aims to work within the system rather than being a “bomb thrower”, unlike some of his more controversial counterparts.

Montana’s political landscape offers a springboard to higher office, including the U.S. Senate, governorship, and White House Cabinet. Rehberg, along with other candidates like Troy Downing and Elsie Arntzen, is vying for this opportunity in the newly created congressional district. Despite being vastly outspent by opponents like Downing, Rehberg remains optimistic that Montana residents will remember him and give him another chance. His absence from politics since his failed Senate bid in 2012 has been marked by personal and professional challenges, but he believes he still has the vigor necessary for Congress.

The congressional district in question covers over 100,000 square miles of mostly open space and is predominately white. With an average of around 5 people per square mile, the voters in this district have unique needs and interests that must be addressed by their elected representative. Rehberg, Downing, and Arntzen have infused their campaigns with personal loans, reflecting the competitive nature of the seven-way race. Downing, in particular, has received significant financial backing from a political group based in Washington, D.C., and has expressed a commitment to representing his constituents over joining a specific caucus.

Despite challenges and setbacks in his personal and professional life, Rehberg remains committed to serving the people of Montana. He acknowledges the rough nature of his previous Senate race but is hopeful that his dedication to the state and its residents will shine through. He emphasizes his consistent philosophy and values since he first entered politics in 1984, suggesting that his experience and clarity of purpose make him a strong candidate for the congressional seat. As the primary approaches, Rehberg’s campaign faces stiff competition, but he remains determined to make a lasting impact and contribute positively to the political landscape in Montana.
