The bond between Onyx and Mallow began in April 2019 when Mallow, a stray cat living near Onyx’s apartment complex, sought refuge from a storm and decided to stay. Mallow is described as playful, energetic, and affectionate, often seeking out Onyx for snuggles and companionship, especially when he is reading. Despite the common perception that cats are aloof and independent, research suggests that they can form strong bonds with their human companions similar to those of dogs and children.
A study published in the journal Current Biology conducted tests with cats and their owners to determine the nature of their attachments. The study found that around 65 percent of the cats and kittens formed secure attachments to their owners, while 35 percent were insecurely attached. This level of attachment is comparable to that seen in human infants and higher than in dogs. Mallow’s behavior with Onyx further reinforces the notion of a strong bond between them, as she shows signs of seeking attention and comfort from him whenever he is working at his desk.
