Former U.S. Navy pilot and business consultant Aaron Dimmock has filed paperwork to challenge U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz in the upcoming GOP primary in a heavily Republican district in western Florida. The district is home to the Pensacola Naval Air Station and over 93,000 veterans. Dimmock, who teaches business executives how to lead with candor, has not issued a statement or responded to emails seeking comment. Gaetz, a favorite of former President Donald Trump, quickly dismissed Dimmock as “a Woke Toby Flenderson” in reference to a character from “The Office.”
Gaetz, who was involved in the ousting of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, has faced criticism from his Republican colleagues for his disruptive behavior. Gaetz filed a motion that allowed him and seven other Republicans to remove McCarthy from his position, leading to McCarthy’s resignation from Congress in 2023. Despite being the subject of an ongoing House ethics investigation into alleged sexual misconduct with an underage girl, Gaetz has denied the accusations. His Republican critics accuse him of being a chaos agent who was motivated by the ethics probe.
Dimmock, a former U.S. Navy pilot with a background in ocean engineering and administration, has a master’s degree from Georgetown University and a doctorate from Virginia Commonwealth University. His campaign treasurer previously worked for American Patriots PAC, the committee McCarthy used to support his preferred candidates in the 2022 election. Dimmock’s primary focus on leadership and candor may appeal to voters in the district as he challenges Gaetz, who has raised $4.5 million for his campaign over the last two years.
Gaetz, the son of a prominent Panhandle politician, quickly entered politics after graduating from law school in 2007. He won a special election in 2010 to fill a vacant Florida House seat and was elected to the U.S. House in 2016. Gaetz has easily won reelection three times and has built a significant campaign fund with $2 million in reserves. In the upcoming GOP primary, Dimmock will challenge Gaetz for the Republican nomination before potentially facing Democrat Gay Valimont, a former Florida leader in Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, who has raised $280,000 for her campaign.
