Growing up in regional Queensland in the late 1990s, Shannon Molloy faced intense bigotry and bullying at his all-boys Catholic school due to being gay. He experienced physical violence, taunts, and cruel pranks, which led him to try to take his own life at the age of 14. Shannon’s single mother, who worked as a local hairdresser, was his constant support, fighting for him at the school and trying to lift him up when he was at his lowest. Desperate to help her son through his struggles, she turned to popular culture for inspiration, including a cheesy late ’90s bubblegum pop song by S Club 7 called “Bring It All Back.”

In a moment of desperation, Shannon’s mother played the song for him, encouraging him to hold on and not let the bullies win. The upbeat and empowering lyrics became a source of comfort and strength for Shannon during his darkest days. Even now, decades later, the song remains an anthem for him, a reminder of his mother’s love and support when he needed it most. The song’s message of perseverance and self-acceptance resonated with Shannon, encouraging him to believe that his time would come and to never stop trying.

Reflecting on his experiences growing up in a small town as a gay teenager, Shannon decided to share his story through a book titled “Fourteen.” The book detailed his struggles with bullying, isolation, and self-acceptance during a challenging time in his life. The success of the book inspired a stage production based on Shannon’s experiences, which became a sell-out hit at the Brisbane Festival in 2022. The production, titled “Fourteen,” explores themes of resilience, love, and acceptance, touching the hearts of audiences beyond the LGBTQ+ community.

Shannon never imagined that his story would have such a powerful impact on others, resonating with a wide range of people who have faced adversity and hardship. Through his book and the subsequent stage production, Shannon has been able to share his message of hope and perseverance, inspiring others to keep pushing forward in the face of adversity. The play, featuring a soundtrack of ’90s pop music including “Bring It All Back,” is set to tour nationally, allowing Shannon’s story to reach even more audiences and continue spreading a message of love and acceptance.

The success of “Fourteen” and the positive reception it has received highlight the importance of sharing personal stories of struggle and triumph. Shannon’s journey from a bullied teenager to a bestselling author and playwright demonstrates the resilience and strength that can come from embracing one’s true self and seeking support from loved ones. By sharing his story, Shannon has not only found healing and closure but has also touched the lives of others who may be facing similar challenges. Through the power of storytelling and music, Shannon’s message of hope and perseverance continues to inspire audiences across the country.
