The Rangers won their first-round matchup with the Capitals in a 3-1 victory by taking advantage of special teams play. Despite receiving more penalties, the Rangers scored three power-play goals and successfully killed off most of Washington’s power plays. They even scored a shorthanded goal for the second consecutive game, making them just the third team to achieve a shorthanded game-winning goal in consecutive playoff contests.

The penalty disparity in the series has been a factor, with the Capitals earning six power plays compared to the Rangers’ four. However, the Rangers have been more efficient with their special teams opportunities, capitalizing on key moments during the games. Chris Kreider scored the Rangers’ lone five-on-five goal in Game 3, with Jack Roslovic extending his point streak to three games with an assist on the goal.

Despite missing a practice before Game 3, Alex Wennberg suited up and played, contributing to the Rangers’ efforts in the matchup with the Capitals. With the series now at 3-0 in favor of the Rangers, they have the chance to finish things in Game 4 on Sunday. The team will have one more practice before the crucial game to prepare and maintain their momentum.

Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette declined to share his thoughts on the 12 penalties called in Game 3, hinting at discontent with the officiating. Despite this, the Rangers have been able to overcome the penalty disparity by making the most of their special teams opportunities. The penalty kill unit has been effective in fending off Washington’s power plays, helping the team secure crucial wins in the series.

The Rangers have made franchise history by scoring shorthanded goals in consecutive playoff games, showcasing their ability to convert on a variety of opportunities. Players like Chris Kreider and Igor Shesterkin have been instrumental in the team’s success, leading the way in critical moments of the games. The team’s ability to capitalize on opportunities and overcome challenges has been key to their performance in the series against the Capitals.

Overall, the Rangers have shown resilience and determination in their playoff matchup with the Capitals, navigating through tough officiating and penalty disparities to secure important victories. With the chance to finish the series in Game 4, the team is focused on maintaining their momentum and executing their game plan effectively. The contributions from key players like Kreider and Shesterkin have been crucial to the team’s success, highlighting their depth and skill in critical moments of the games.
