Ottawa and Quebec invest $100M to increase semiconductor capacity

The federal and Quebec governments are investing almost $100 million in boosting Canada’s manufacturing capacity for semiconductors, essential in various technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the $59.9 million investment from Ottawa to support IBM Canada’s semiconductor packaging facility in Bromont, Quebec. The funds will also benefit the MiQro Innovation Collaborative Centre, a research group focusing on speeding up the commercialization of digital technology components. Trudeau emphasized the importance of reliable sources like Canada in delivering products needed for economic growth, especially in sectors like energy, quantum computing, and robotics.

Quebec is also providing $38.9 million in loans to IBM Canada to help increase capacity at the Bromont plant, buy equipment, and develop a new generation of switches. Economy Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon revealed that the funding includes a $32 million forgivable loan for new equipment to package semiconductor circuitry, as well as a $7 million loan to automate a packaging assembly line for switches used in the telecommunications industry. The joint investment from both levels of government is expected to create 280 jobs in the region, solidifying Canada’s position in the supply chain for advanced semiconductor packaging.

IBM Canada’s Bromont plant is described as one of the largest chip assembly and testing facilities in North America, specializing in transforming advanced semiconductor components into cutting-edge microelectronic solutions. The plant collaborates closely with IBM’s complex in Albany, New York, and the funding announced on Friday aims to establish a corridor of semiconductor innovation linking New York to Bromont. The agreements are projected to enhance Canada’s presence in semiconductor manufacturing and strengthen its role in producing advanced packaging solutions for the global market.
