Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy, recently announced that the Pope will be participating in the G7 session dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI). She emphasized the importance of ensuring that AI remains centered around humans and controlled by humans. Meloni highlighted that AI poses both great opportunities and risks, as well as impacts global equilibriums. She stressed the need to develop governance mechanisms to prioritize humanity in the development and control of AI. She referenced the ethical and intellectual reflections on AI that have been emerging, specifically mentioning the Rome Call for AI Ethics initiated by the Vatican in 2022.

Meloni acknowledged that many consider the advent of AI to be the greatest anthropological challenge of our time. She emphasized the importance of valuing the ethical and intellectual discussions surrounding AI, and highlighted the need for collaboration in addressing the challenges posed by AI. The Prime Minister noted that no one can face this challenge alone and emphasized the value of the discussions and advancements made in the field of AI ethics. She intends to bring this ethical framework to the attention of other world leaders at the upcoming G7 summit in Puglia from June 13th to 15th.

Meloni quoted a speech by Pope John Paul II in 1979, where he emphasized that political activities at all levels are ultimately for the benefit of humanity. She expressed her commitment, and that of the international community, to ensuring that AI continues to serve humanity and is directed towards human-centered goals. She highlighted the need for AI to have a person-centered approach and stressed the importance of maintaining human control over AI developments to ensure their alignment with human values and ethics.

The Prime Minister emphasized the need for a human-centered approach to AI governance and development. She highlighted the significance of keeping human values and ethics at the forefront of AI advancements to mitigate risks and ensure the technology remains beneficial to society. Meloni acknowledged the complexities and potential consequences of AI on global dynamics and called for a collaborative effort in developing governance mechanisms to ensure the responsible development and use of AI technologies.

Meloni underscored the importance of collaboration and shared responsibility in addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by AI. She highlighted the role of the Rome Call for AI Ethics in providing a concrete ethical framework for AI development and emphasized the need to prioritize human values in the innovation and use of AI. The Prime Minister expressed her commitment to advancing the conversation on AI ethics at the G7 summit and bringing together international leaders to address the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence in a human-centered and ethical manner.
