Former Couples Come Dine With Me winner Adam Smith, 33, was sentenced to 10 years in jail and banned from driving for nine years after being found guilty at Leeds Crown Court of killing a student, Oliver Pryde, 18, while driving under the influence of drugs and without a license. Smith had protested his innocence throughout the trial but was ultimately convicted. Oliver was returning home after watching the Euro 2020 final when he was struck by Smith in Kirkburton, Huddersfield, on July 12, 2021. Smith fled the scene but was caught soon after. He was found guilty of causing death by careless driving under the influence of drugs and driving without a license or insurance.

Smith, who had appeared on Couples Come Dine with Me in 2016 alongside his then-partner, was handed a 10-year prison sentence and a nine-year driving ban. His actions left Oliver’s family and friends devastated, depriving him of a promising future. Oliver, who wanted to become a maths teacher, died just two weeks before his 19th birthday. His mother, Stacey, expressed her grief and the loss of a future teacher who aimed to inspire the next generation. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents reports that drug impairment contributes to around 90 fatal road crashes in Britain each year, leading to injuries and casualties. In 2022, drug-impaired drivers caused injuries to 2,715 individuals, with 97 fatalities and 926 serious injuries. This tragic incident highlights the dangers and consequences of drug driving, serving as a deterrent to others.

Smith’s conviction and sentencing at Leeds Crown Court received media attention, emphasizing the severity of his actions and the impact on Oliver’s family. The Major Collision Enquiry Team’s Detective Constable Mark Turner underlined the devastating consequences of Smith’s decision to drive under the influence of drugs without a license or insurance, leading to Oliver’s untimely death. Despite Smith’s protests of innocence during the trial, the evidence against him led to a guilty verdict, resulting in a substantial prison sentence and driving ban. The sentencing aims to draw attention to the risks and repercussions of drug driving, urging drivers to act responsibly and avoid such dangerous behavior.

Smith’s background as a former Couples Come Dine With Me winner added another layer to the tragic incident, contrasting his previous television success with the devastating consequences of his actions on the road. The collision that resulted in Oliver’s death highlighted the importance of responsible driving and the severe penalties for driving under the influence of drugs without a license or insurance. Oliver’s aspirations to become a maths teacher and inspire future generations added to the tragedy, leaving his family and friends shattered and attempting to rebuild after the loss caused by Smith’s reckless decision to drive impaired. The case serves as a reminder of the legal and personal consequences of dangerous driving behavior and the importance of upholding road safety regulations.

The emotional impact of Smith’s actions on Oliver’s family and friends was profound, with his mother, Stacey, expressing a lifelong sense of loss and the struggle to cope with rebuilding the family after Smith’s actions shattered their lives. The sentencing and ban handed down by the court symbolize justice for Oliver and his loved ones, highlighting the severe consequences of driving under the influence of drugs and without a license. The case stands as a cautionary tale for others, emphasizing the need for responsible and safe driving practices to prevent tragedies like Oliver’s death. The media coverage of the trial serves to raise awareness of the dangers of drug driving and the legal ramifications that individuals face if they engage in such reckless behavior.

The tragic story of Oliver’s death and Smith’s conviction in the Leeds Crown Court underscores the devastating impact of irresponsible driving choices and the profound loss experienced by victims’ families and friends. The case serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and the legal penalties individuals may face for such actions. Oliver’s aspirations to become a teacher and inspire future generations add to the poignancy of the story, highlighting the cut short potential and promising future that was tragically taken away by Smith’s reckless decision to drive without a license and under the influence of drugs. The court’s decision to sentence Smith to 10 years in prison and ban him from driving for nine years aims to bring justice for Oliver and his loved ones while sending a strong message against dangerous driving behaviors in society.
