During a town hall meeting, Mr Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s finance minister, emphasized the importance of ensuring that all groups of civil servants benefit from the remuneration system. He expressed his desire for top management in the public service to conduct a comprehensive review of the system in order to prevent any department or group from feeling left behind. Mr Anwar stressed the need for recognition and promotion to be based on performance rather than age or length of service, in order to increase efficiency and value people based on their contributions.

Additionally, Mr Anwar highlighted the need for more female leaders in the civil service, noting that the current representation of women leaders does not align with the overall 42 percent female participation in decision-making roles in public service. He discussed the importance of increasing the number of women in positions such as secretaries-general and directors-general of departments. Mr Anwar acknowledged that there is a lack of female leaders within the civil service and emphasized the need for steps to be taken to address this gender imbalance.

In response to a question about addressing weaknesses in the administrative group, Mr Anwar acknowledged that there is room for improvement in governance within the civil service. He noted that there are weaknesses in governance from top to bottom, and emphasized the need to push ahead with efforts to improve governance. Mr Anwar recognized that it may take time to address these weaknesses, but stressed the importance of making progress in order to enhance governance within the civil service.

Overall, Mr Anwar’s statements underscore the importance of ensuring fairness and equality in the remuneration system for civil servants, and the need to base recognition and promotion on performance rather than seniority. He also highlights the importance of increasing the representation of women in leadership positions within the civil service to better reflect the overall gender balance in decision-making roles. Additionally, Mr Anwar acknowledges the need for improvements in governance within the civil service and emphasizes the importance of taking steps to address weaknesses in order to enhance overall efficiency and effectiveness.
