Miami Beach Police arrested Gregory Fitzgerald Gibert, 53, in connection with the beating death of 37-year-old transgender woman Andrea Dorias Dos Passos. Dos Passos’ body was found near the Miami City Ballet after an employee noticed what he believed to be someone sleeping outside the building. When police arrived, they found Dos Passos deceased with trauma and blood on her face and head. Video surveillance showed Gibert approaching Dos Passos while she was sleeping and repeatedly hitting her with a metal pipe before walking away and placing the pipe in a nearby trashcan.

Gibert, who had recently been released from prison after serving time for attempted armed robbery and aggravated assault, was found wearing clothing with what appeared to be bloodstains at the time of his arrest. Police stated that there was no evidence to suggest that the killing was a hate crime or targeted towards Dos Passos because of her sexual orientation or gender. Gibert refused to cooperate with investigators, leaving the motive for the killing unknown. He also refused to appear in bond court and remains in custody.

Dos Passos’ stepfather expressed his devastation at her loss and questioned whether the killing was a random act or motivated by a prior interaction with the suspect. He criticized the system for failing to protect Dos Passos, who he says had no chance as she was sleeping when she was attacked. The Miami City Ballet & Museum closed for the rest of the day following the incident, with residents expressing concern over the safety of women in the area.

Police emphasized that the investigation remains open and they are committed to collaborating closely with the State Attorney’s Office as the judicial process unfolds. They described Gibert as a violent individual who should not have been on the streets, given his criminal history. With the suspect refusing to cooperate, the motive for the killing may never be fully known. Dos Passos’ tragic death has left her family and the community in mourning, with many questioning the senseless violence that led to her untimely demise.

As the case progresses through the legal system, authorities will continue to gather evidence and work towards seeking justice for Dos Passos. The brutal nature of her killing has sparked outrage and calls for stricter measures to prevent similar acts of violence in the future. The community has come together to remember Dos Passos and advocate for the safety and rights of all individuals, regardless of their gender identity. Gibert’s arrest serves as a reminder of the importance of holding violent offenders accountable for their actions and upholding the laws that protect marginalized communities.
