Officials issue warning of elevated wildfire threat in southern Alberta

Stefan Keenzle, a retired University of Lethbridge professor in the department of Geography and Environment, warns that conditions are ripe for wildfires in the region. Factors such as drier soil, higher temperatures, and lower humidity contribute to an increased risk of wildfires. Only days into the wildfire season, crews have already been battling blazes, indicating a potentially busy summer ahead for firefighting agencies. Troy Hicks, the Chief Fire Marshall with the Lethbridge Fire Department, anticipates a busy season based on the hot and dry weather conditions and recent grass fires on the outskirts of town.

Lethbridge County recently implemented a fire advisory for the region, urging the public to be cautious and responsible when conducting burns. Heath Wright, the Emergency Services Manager of Lethbridge County, emphasizes the importance of safety in light of the dry and drought conditions. With the prospect of warmer weather ahead, Keenzle points out that a La Nina year can lead to even hotter and drier summers, increasing the risk of severe heat domes and wildfires. The combination of these factors suggests a challenging few months for fire crews as they work to protect the community.

The County and the Fire Department stress the need for public awareness and responsible behavior to prevent wildfires. Wright highlights the impact of careless actions, such as disposing of cigarettes improperly, on the environment and urges individuals to take extra precautions. The rapid spread of fires in current conditions is a significant concern, with grass fires doubling in size every two to three seconds, emphasizing the importance of prompt action and vigilance. Both agencies encourage the public to stay informed through social media and their websites for updates on fire bans, restrictions, advisories, and safety tips.

As the summer progresses, the risk of wildfires remains high in the region due to the prevailing weather conditions. Keenzle’s expertise in geography and the environment underscores the severity of the situation and the need for proactive measures to prevent and manage wildfires. The collaborative efforts of the County of Lethbridge and the Fire Department of Lethbridge aim to raise awareness and promote responsible behavior among the public. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, residents can help reduce the threat of wildfires and protect their communities from potential disasters. Overall, the message is clear: everyone plays a role in fire safety, and by working together, we can minimize the risk of wildfires and ensure the safety of all residents.
