The City of West Kelowna, British Columbia has recently reached a new collective agreement with its unionized workers, affecting 195 employees of the Association of Local Government Employees Union (ALGEU). The four-year contract includes a total wage increase of 16.5%, with the first year seeing a retroactive raise of 4.5% from January 1, 2024. Subsequent years will see increases of five percent on January 1, 2025, and 3.5% for the remaining two years. The agreement was reached after three days of bargaining in April, with the ALGEU ratifying the deal on April 17 and the city council approving it on April 23. The city stated that the wage increases are in line with other recent labour agreements in British Columbia, ensuring fair compensation for its employees.

In addition to the wage increases, the collective agreement includes minor housekeeping amendments to ensure stability in labour relations within the city. These changes were described as minor by the city, with the primary focus being on the wage increases for employees. The agreement is aimed at providing a fair and competitive compensation package for the unionized workers of West Kelowna, while also maintaining a positive working relationship between the city and its employees. The city emphasized the importance of the collective agreement in ensuring labour stability and fair treatment for its workers, highlighting the mutual benefits of reaching a satisfactory agreement for both parties involved.

Global News reached out to the ALGEU for further details and comments on the collective agreement, but no response was provided at the time of reporting. The lack of response from the union may indicate a general satisfaction with the terms of the agreement, as the ALGEU had already ratified the deal prior to its approval by the city council. The successful negotiation of the contract reflects a collaborative effort between the city and its unionized workers, demonstrating a commitment to fair and equitable treatment for all employees. The wage increases and minor amendments to the collective agreement serve to benefit both parties, ensuring a harmonious and productive work environment for the city of West Kelowna.

The signing of the collective agreement between the City of West Kelowna and the ALGEU marks a significant milestone in labour relations within the city. The agreement provides a framework for fair and competitive compensation for the unionized workers, with wage increases totaling 16.5% over the four-year contract. The successful negotiation process, which included three days of bargaining, reflects a commitment to open communication and collaboration between the city and its employees. The inclusion of minor housekeeping amendments in the agreement further solidifies the relationship between the two parties, providing a foundation for labour stability and mutual respect within the workforce.

Overall, the collective agreement signifies a positive step forward for both the city of West Kelowna and its unionized workers. The agreement ensures that employees receive fair and competitive wages, in line with recent labour agreements in British Columbia.
