Linda L. Bean, a prominent figure in the business world, philanthropy, and conservative activism, has passed away at the age of 82. Bean, the granddaughter of L.L. Bean founder Leon Leonwood Bean, was known for her dedication to her home state of Maine and the family business. She served on the company’s board for nearly 50 years and also expanded her entrepreneurial ventures by owning lobster dealerships, founding the Perfect Maine Lobster brand, and owning various properties in Maine.

In addition to her business acumen, Bean was committed to philanthropic endeavors, supporting causes such as medical helicopters and the Maine Botanical Gardens. She was also instrumental in efforts to certify Maine’s lobster industry as sustainable, although the certification was later revoked due to concerns about harm to whales. Bean’s love for Maine’s coastal communities, islands, and art, particularly the work of the Wyeth family, was well-known, and she was praised for her contributions to the state by Republican U.S. Senator Susan Collins.

Bean was also involved in politics, running for Congress twice in the late 1980s and early 1990s. She espoused conservative views on issues such as abortion rights, gay rights legislation, and gun control, as well as advocating for tax cuts to boost the economy. Bean’s support for Republican causes and candidates, including Donald Trump, attracted controversy at times, leading to calls for boycotts of L.L. Bean. Despite their political differences, Governor Janet Mills, a Democrat, expressed admiration for Bean’s business skills and shared love for Maine’s coastal heritage.

Following criticism from liberal groups for excessive political contributions, Bean faced backlash and accusations of harassment. However, then-President Trump defended her and urged his supporters to continue purchasing products from L.L. Bean. Despite their differences in political ideology, Trump and Bean found common ground in their shared appreciation for Maine’s natural beauty, art, and cuisine. The passing of Linda L. Bean has left a void in the Maine community, with condolences pouring in from various individuals, including politicians, colleagues, and friends.

The legacy of Linda L. Bean will be remembered for her entrepreneurial spirit, philanthropy, and commitment to her home state. As a prominent figure in the business world and conservative activism, Bean leaves behind a lasting impact on Maine’s lobster industry, charitable organizations, and political landscape. Her contributions to the state’s economy and culture, as well as her advocacy for conservative causes, have left a mark on the community that will be remembered for years to come. The passing of Linda L. Bean marks the end of an era, but her legacy will continue to inspire and influence future generations of entrepreneurs, activists, and philanthropists.
