Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania recently gave an interview with Fox Digital where he criticized activists calling for a cease-fire in Gaza and slammed fellow Democrats for their response to Iran’s attacks against Israel. He expressed his belief that protests involving yelling at people in public places are not appropriate, legal, or helpful, and said that protesters who engage in such behavior are acting inappropriately.
Since the conflict between Israel and terrorist group Hamas began, anti-Israel demonstrations have taken place across the United States. Some of these protesters have gone to extreme lengths to voice their discontent with U.S. policy towards Israel, trespassing in government buildings, blocking bridges, and entering private businesses. Fetterman clarified that while he supports the right to protest, he takes issue with demonstrations that disrupt the lives of others by blocking traffic on bridges and roads.
During the interview, Fetterman emphasized that his priority is advocating for the release of hostages, including Americans held in Gaza. He maintained his stance as a strong supporter of Israel, stating that Hamas initiated the conflict and has committed terrible acts. He argued that until the hostages are released, the Palestinian cause for statehood cannot move forward, as Hamas holds the power to end the violence by surrendering and allowing for peace negotiations.
While some Democrats have expressed concerns about Israel’s decision to retaliate against Iran following direct attacks on the country, Fetterman stressed that Israel has the right to make its own choices. He expressed his hope that the conflict does not escalate further and lead to a wider regional war. Fetterman criticized members of his party who failed to condemn Iran for attacking Israel, calling such behavior “crazy” and reaffirming his consistent support for Israel.
When asked about the growing division within the Democratic Party regarding support for Israel, Fetterman stated that he cannot speak for other members but reiterated his unwavering support for Israel throughout the conflict. He noted his disappointment with Democrats who were hesitant to condemn Iran and emphasized his belief that standing with Israel is crucial. Fetterman did not indicate support for legislative action to address disruptive protests but stressed the importance of expressing dissent in a respectful and appropriate manner that does not infringe on the rights and safety of others.
