In Game 1 of the first-round Western Conference playoff series, the Oklahoma City Thunder narrowly defeated the New Orleans Pelicans by a score of 94-92. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 28 points, including the go-ahead basket in the final minute. The victory marked the Thunder’s first home playoff win since 2019. Jalen Williams contributed 19 points and Chet Holmgren added 15 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists for the Thunder. The Pelicans were led by Trey Murphy III with 21 points and CJ McCollum with 20 points. Notably, Zion Williamson, the Pelicans’ leading scorer in the regular season, was sidelined with a strained left hamstring.

In the closing moments of the game, with the score tied at 90, Gilgeous-Alexander made an off-balance jumper and was fouled. He converted the free throw to give Oklahoma City a 93-90 lead. McCollum responded with a mid-range jumper to bring the Pelicans within one point at 93-92. Holmgren then made a critical free throw with 14 seconds remaining, putting the Thunder up 94-92. McCollum attempted an off-balance 3-pointer in the final seconds, but it missed, securing the victory for Oklahoma City in Game 1. The Thunder will look to extend their lead in the series when they host Game 2 on Wednesday night.

The intensity of the playoff atmosphere was palpable in Oklahoma City, as fans chanted “M-V-P!” in support of Gilgeous-Alexander during his clutch performance in the final minute. The Thunder’s victory was a hard-fought battle against a resilient Pelicans team that kept the game close throughout. With Williamson sidelined, New Orleans relied on Murphy and McCollum to lead their offensive efforts. Despite the loss, the Pelicans showed determination and skill in their playoff debut, setting the stage for an exciting series against the Thunder.

Looking ahead to Game 2, both teams will make adjustments and strategize to gain an advantage in the series. The Thunder will aim to continue their strong performance from Game 1 and capitalize on their home-court advantage. Gilgeous-Alexander will be a key player to watch as he looks to maintain his scoring prowess and leadership on the court. The Pelicans, meanwhile, will be motivated to bounce back from their narrow defeat and even the series. With the potential return of Williamson from injury, New Orleans will have additional offensive firepower and defensive presence to challenge the Thunder.

As the playoff series unfolds, fans can expect to see thrilling matchups and intense competition between the Thunder and Pelicans. Each game is crucial in determining the outcome of the series, and both teams will be fighting hard to advance to the next round of the playoffs. With standout performances from players like Gilgeous-Alexander, Murphy, and McCollum, the series promises to be a showcase of talent and determination on the basketball court. Stay tuned for more exciting playoff action as the Thunder and Pelicans continue their battle for a spot in the Western Conference playoffs.
