Terry Anderson, an American journalist and Lebanon hostage, passed away at the age of 76 due to complications from heart surgery. He was kidnapped in 1985 by Shia Hezbollah militants and held captive for over 6 years. Anderson was the last of 18 Western hostages to be released by the kidnappers, who were seeking revenge against Israel and pressuring the Reagan administration during the Iran-Contra Affair. After his release, Anderson married his fiancé and met his 6-year-old daughter for the first time.

During his captivity, Anderson was beaten, blindfolded, and kept in chains but not tortured. He found solace in the Bible, praying for hours to maintain his self-respect and dignity. Anderson was born in Ohio and served in the Marines before pursuing a career in journalism. He worked for The Associated Press in Japan and South Africa before his assignment in Lebanon. Following his release, Anderson faced challenges acclimating to the “real world” and struggled with emotional and psychological trauma.

After his release, Anderson sued Iran for $100 million in damages and collected $26 million from frozen assets. He used the funds to establish the Vietnam Children’s Fund, building schools in Vietnam, and became involved in journalism advocacy as the honorary chairman of the Committee to Protect Journalists. He also taught at various journalism schools, including Columbia University, Ohio University, and Syracuse University. Anderson’s personal life included multiple marriages and struggles with the aftermath of his captivity.

Reflecting on his ordeal, Anderson admitted to ongoing emotional and psychological difficulties as he tried to cope with the aftermath of his captivity. He acknowledged that he had been more damaged than he initially realized and that the recovery process was lengthy. Anderson is survived by his daughter, two of his three wives, a sister, and a brother. His journalism career, advocacy work, and efforts to help children in Vietnam leave a lasting legacy of resilience and compassion.
