Salt Lake City’s new NHL team signifies a milestone for the city’s emergence as a major pro sports hub

In a surprising turn of events, the Arizona Coyotes have announced their relocation to Salt Lake City, Utah. While this may seem sudden to some, local organizers explain that this move is the result of years of efforts to bring professional hockey and other elite sports to the growing capital city. Salt Lake City, which already boasts the NBA’s Utah Jazz, is now on its way to becoming a hub for professional sports in the Mountain West, with plans for a new hockey-specific stadium in the works.

The upcoming 2034 Winter Olympics, expected to be officially hosted in Salt Lake City by the International Olympic Committee, will add to the city’s sports landscape, with the new hockey team potentially sharing the Delta Center with the Jazz. Additionally, plans for a new baseball stadium and the pursuit of an MLB expansion team signal the city’s ambition to become a destination for major sports leagues. Utah billionaire Ryan Smith, who owns multiple sports teams in the area, has applied to create a sports and entertainment district in downtown Salt Lake City.

Mayor Erin Mendenhall views the Coyotes’ move as a defining moment for the city, unlocking new growth potential and solidifying its status as a sports destination. State and municipal leaders are leveraging the local passion for sports to drive the city forward, following the successful examples of other midsize cities like Las Vegas. The confidence Utah has instilled in industry leaders over the years has paved the way for this moment, showcasing the city’s commitment to becoming a prominent player in the sports world.

While some have questioned whether Salt Lake City, with its moderate population, can sustain a professional hockey team, early data seems promising. With over 22,700 season ticket deposits already secured, interest in the new team is high. The presence of multiple rinks and a growing youth hockey program in the valley suggest a burgeoning interest in the sport. However, concerns remain about the Coyotes’ performance on the ice and their ability to engage the community.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has expressed confidence in the Coyotes’ relocation to Salt Lake City, emphasizing the importance of placing the team in a location where they can be successful from the start. With the support of the community, a strong ownership group, and plans for a new stadium, the city is poised to embrace its new hockey team. The upcoming seasons will reveal whether Salt Lake City can replicate the passion it has shown for basketball with its new love for hockey.
