CityCats in Brisbane allow dogs on board, while trains and buses do not permit them.

A 2016 study in Sydney found that there were 2.4 million dog-related trips in private cars every week, highlighting the commonality of pet transport needs. For dog owners who do not drive, this lack of transportation limits their ability to take their pets on outings to destinations beyond their local area. In Brisbane, there are over 160 off-leash dog areas, some of which offer impressive amenities such as creeks for splashing or agility exercise equipment. The desire to take their dogs to these locations prompts calls for pets to be allowed on public transport in Brisbane, with the RSPCA supporting the idea to prevent animals from being left in hot cars.

A Translink spokesman explained the challenges involved with allowing pets on trains, buses, and trams, citing concerns about the enclosed nature of these vehicles and the potential hygiene risks. Despite this, CityCats, which are ferries, are deemed suitable for pets because they have designated outdoor areas for animals, minimizing interactions with other passengers. Guide, hearing, and assistance dogs are always permitted on Translink services and do not need to wear muzzles. While there are currently no plans to change the policy regarding pets on public transport, there is the potential for dialogue regarding allowing dogs on buses and trains, similar to the existing practice on CityCats.

During a recent trip on a CityCat with her rescue dog Juno, the author observed that even though the ferry was crowded with school students, there were no issues with having a pet onboard. The idea of designating certain train carriages as dog-friendly, similar to quiet carriages where noise is discouraged, could provide a solution for accommodating pets on public transport. The precedent of allowing dogs on CityCats for the past four years without major incidents suggests that it may be time to revisit the conversation around pets on buses and trains in Brisbane. By considering the needs of both pet owners and other passengers, a balance can be struck to ensure a positive experience for all.
