The New York Mets extended their winning streak to six games with a 6-4 victory over the struggling Los Angeles Dodgers. Starling Marte hit a go-ahead, three-run home run in the sixth inning, and Pete Alonso made a spectacular rally-killing play on defense. The Mets have now won five straight series and have gone 12-3 after an 0-5 start. The Dodgers have struggled at the plate, going 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position and stranding 13 runners. They have lost three straight series for the first time since June.
Despite issuing 10 walks, the most since August 15, the Mets were able to secure the win over the Dodgers. Reed Garrett earned his first big league save after 39 in the minors and two in Japan. Michael Tonkin got the win for the Mets, just three days after being claimed off waivers from Minnesota. The Dodgers tied the game 2-2 in the fifth inning, but the Mets took a 5-2 lead on Marte’s home run in the sixth. Freddie Freeman’s two-run single brought the Dodgers within one run, but they missed out on other scoring opportunities.
Francisco Lindor drove in two runs for the Mets, including an RBI single in the eighth inning. Marte also contributed with an RBI single in the fourth. The Dodgers faced challenges with Mets relievers walking the bases loaded in the eighth inning before Edwin Diaz struck out Teoscar Hernández and Max Muncy. Both starting pitchers, José Buttó for the Mets and Gavin Stone for the Dodgers, struggled in a lengthy first inning, but each only allowed one run.
In terms of injuries, the Mets placed C Francisco Alvarez on the 10-Day injured list with a sprained left thumb. They selected C Tomás Nido from Triple-A Syracuse and designated LHP Kolton Ingram for assignment. The Dodgers placed RHP Kyle Hurt on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation, retroactive to Wednesday, and recalled LHP Nick Ramirez from Triple-A Oklahoma City. The next game will feature Mets RHP Adrian Houser facing off against Dodgers LHP James Paxton.
