Nigerian chess champion Tunde Onakoya broke the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon by playing continuously for 60 hours in New York City’s Times Square. Onakoya, who aims to raise $1 million for children’s education across Africa, initially set out to play for 58 hours but exceeded that goal by playing for an additional 2 hours. The record-breaking attempt saw him playing against American chess champion Shawn Martinez as per Guinness World Record guidelines. The record organization has yet to publicly comment on the attempt, as it can take weeks for them to confirm new records.

The support for Onakoya was evident both online and at the scene, with onlookers and supporters being entertained by African music while he played. Among the supporters was Nigerian music star Davido, who cheered Onakoya on during the marathon. Onakoya aims to use the record-breaking attempt to raise awareness and funds for children’s education in African slums. He founded Chess in Slums Africa in 2018 with a goal to support the education of at least 1 million children across the continent.

Onakoya’s energy remained high throughout the marathon, fueled by the support he received from his fans and the vibrant atmosphere at Times Square. His diet during the event consisted of water and jollof rice, a popular West African dish. Despite the grueling nature of the marathon, with only short breaks allotted for the players every hour, Onakoya found time to interact with his supporters from both Nigeria and New York. The event raised $22,000 within the first 20 hours, showcasing the overwhelming support from Nigerians in the U.S., global leaders, celebrities, and passersby.

The record-breaking attempt by Onakoya garnered attention and support in Nigeria, where he regularly organizes chess competitions for underprivileged youth. With over 10 million school-age children in Nigeria not attending school, the focus on education and empowerment for these individuals is crucial. Public figures, including Nigeria’s former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, showed their support for Onakoya’s initiative. Osinbajo praised Onakoya’s efforts and encouraged him to continue making a difference in the lives of disadvantaged children. Onakoya’s determination and dedication to this cause are commendable, and his record-breaking achievement serves as a testament to his commitment to improving educational opportunities for children in Africa.
