Russia’s Governor reports destruction of more than 100,000 residential buildings in Donetsk Oblast due to war

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has resulted in significant destruction and damage to residential buildings in Donetsk Oblast. According to regional governor Vadym Filashkin, a total of 116,000 residential buildings, including over 7,000 high-rise apartment blocks, have been destroyed or damaged since the start of the full-scale invasion by Russia in late February 2022. Settlements in eastern Donetsk Oblast are particularly vulnerable to daily Russian attacks due to their proximity to the front line. Heavy fighting continues as Russia aims to occupy the entire region, with many towns and communities suffering extensive destruction. Russian forces currently control around 60% of Donetsk Oblast and have illegally annexed it, along with other neighboring regions.

The scale of destruction in Donetsk Oblast is immense, with many towns and communities completely decimated by the ongoing conflict. Governor Filashkin described the situation in places like Marinka, Vuhledar, Avdiivka, and others as being 70-80% destroyed. The damage is so severe that the Ukrainian government does not have full access to some territories in the region, making it difficult to assess the extent of the destruction. In addition to residential buildings, the region’s heavy industry, which previously contributed significantly to Ukraine’s industrial output, has also been heavily impacted. Large enterprises have been destroyed, leaving only small and medium-sized businesses remaining in the area.

The situation on Ukraine’s eastern front has worsened in recent days, with Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi reporting a significant intensification of offensive efforts by Russian forces. Local authorities in Donetsk Oblast have ceased assessing the damage caused by the war due to the daily barrage of attacks, which makes such assessments both futile and extremely dangerous. Russian forces continue to launch up to 2,500 attacks daily at towns and villages along the embattled region’s 165-mile front line, causing widespread destruction and devastation. The ongoing conflict has created a humanitarian crisis in Donetsk Oblast, with many residents left homeless and vulnerable.

The destruction and damage caused by the conflict in Donetsk Oblast have had a profound impact on the region, leaving many communities in ruins and displacing thousands of residents. The heavy toll on residential buildings, infrastructure, and industry has not only devastated the physical landscape but has also taken a significant toll on the region’s economy and livelihoods. The lack of access to some areas in Donetsk Oblast makes it challenging to provide adequate aid and support to those affected by the conflict. The ongoing violence and daily attacks pose a constant threat to the safety and well-being of residents in the region, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

Support for independent journalism and humanitarian efforts in Ukraine is crucial in addressing the complex challenges and needs arising from the conflict in Donetsk Oblast. By raising awareness about the situation on the ground and providing support to those affected by the conflict, individuals and organizations can make a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable populations. Joining the fight to support independent journalism and organizations working in Ukraine can help amplify the voices of those affected by the conflict and ensure that their stories are heard. By standing in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, we can work towards building a more peaceful and resilient future for all.
