Lawyer who witnessed double-murder suicide at Las Vegas firm describes ‘unimaginable tragedy’

The horrific murder-suicide that took place inside a Las Vegas law firm on April 8, witnessed by attorney Lisa Rasmussen, has left an indelible mark on everyone involved. Rasmussen recalls the moment fellow attorney Joe Houston unexpectedly pulled out a gun and began firing, ultimately killing prominent Las Vegas attorney Dennis Prince and his wife Ashley before taking his own life. The shooting was the tragic culmination of a contentious custody battle that had been rife with tension and animosity.

Rasmussen vividly remembers the chaos and confusion that ensued as the shooter, seated next to her, began his violent attack. The sudden sound of gunshots left her stunned and disoriented, struggling to comprehend the unfolding violence in the room. She managed to flee the conference room along with her client, a pregnant colleague, and a court reporter, seeking safety as the shots continued to ring out behind them.

As the violence came to an end, the full extent of the tragedy became apparent – Joe Houston had murdered Dennis and Ashley Prince in a moment of rage. The Princes were embroiled in a fierce custody battle with Dylan Houston, Ashley’s ex-husband and Joe’s son. Rasmussen, who was representing Kelly Houston, Joe’s wife, during a deposition, acknowledges that the true motives behind the shootings may never be fully understood.

Despite being aware of Joe Houston’s terminal cancer diagnosis, Rasmussen notes that he showed no outward signs of distress or ill health on the day of the shooting. In hindsight, there were no obvious warnings that could have indicated the tragic events that were about to unfold. Rasmussen recounts the seemingly normal interactions leading up to the deposition, with Dennis Prince initiating the proceedings in an abrupt and tense manner.

Reflecting on the aftermath of the tragedy, Rasmussen is grateful for the support she has received from her community and colleagues. She has returned to work but acknowledges the emotional toll the incident has taken on her. Moving forward, she hopes to share her story with other legal professionals to emphasize the importance of civility and respect in the legal profession, in hopes of preventing future tragedies. Dennis Prince, survived by four children, will be remembered for his dedicated work as an attorney and the legacy he leaves behind.
