Traveling as an ‘nepo baby’ in an airline: experiencing all the luxurious perks

Joshua Crawford, a 23-year-old grocer from New Jersey, has become the envy of airplane passengers everywhere after revealing that he is a United Airlines “nepo baby.” This status grants him various perks, such as free flights, first-class upgrades, and other incredible benefits. Crawford’s father worked in the United Airlines cargo sector at Newark Liberty International Airport for over three decades, which has allowed Crawford to enjoy these privileges since birth.

Thanks to his flight privilege, Crawford has flown over 120 flights spanning 260,000 miles in the last five years. He estimates that he has saved a substantial amount of money on first-class upgrades, as he receives them ahead of other passengers due to his “high priority” status. Being upgraded to first class is especially exciting for Crawford, as it is a perk he could never afford on his own. He recently received a complimentary business class bump on a flight from Los Angeles to London for his birthday, a perk that could cost a normal passenger almost $9,000.

Crawford appreciates United Airlines’ first-class amenities, such as premium alcohol, a self-care kit, and a seat that converts into a lay-down bed. He also enjoys the top-notch customer service and multiple meals throughout long flights. Despite being referred to as a “nepo baby,” Crawford has had to learn how to game the system to maximize his benefits. This includes flying standby whenever possible to increase his chances of a complimentary first-class upgrade.

One of Crawford’s savviest moves was ensuring that his dependent status never expired. While United Airlines policy typically severs benefits for children of employees at age 26, Crawford was able to maintain his freebies by being listed as his dad’s “primary friend.” This has allowed him to continue enjoying free flights even after his father’s retirement. Crawford estimates that he has saved around $100,000 through all the free first-class upgrades he has received.

Thanks to his flight privileges, Crawford has been able to travel the world essentially for free. He has visited 25 US states, 12 countries, and four continents, with plans to eventually visit all seven continents. Crawford’s total flight distance is equivalent to circling the globe over 10 times. Some of his favorite trips include the Amalfi Coast in Italy, the Great Barrier Reef, and Tokyo. Despite his luxurious travel experiences, Crawford remains grateful for the opportunities he has had and wishes everyone could fly for free.
