West Ham’s latest European campaign came to an end as they were defeated by Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League quarter-finals. Michail Antonio scored an early goal for West Ham, but a late deflection off Aaron Cresswell sent Leverkusen through to the semi-finals. Antonio criticized the referee’s decisions after the game, which may result in a ban for him in future European matches.

Despite a valiant effort by West Ham, Bayer Leverkusen emerged victorious in the second leg to advance in the Europa League. West Ham’s assistant coach was sent off during a mass brawl that erupted between the players, adding to the drama of the game. The Hammers pushed hard to try to overcome Leverkusen, but ultimately fell short in the end. Manager David Moyes praised his team’s effort but acknowledged that they were not able to progress.

West Ham had hoped Leverkusen would still be recovering from their title celebrations, but the Germans put up a strong performance in the second leg. Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso was pleased with his team’s performance over the two legs. Despite a promising start by West Ham, Leverkusen eventually gained control of the game, leading to their victory. Moyes was disappointed but acknowledged that Leverkusen deserved to go through.

In a heated game that saw both benches receive red cards, tensions ran high between the two teams. Antonio was booked for his involvement in a scuffle that broke out on the pitch. The game ended with Leverkusen securing their spot in the Europa League semi-finals, leaving West Ham to shift their focus back to the Premier League for a chance at European qualification. Moyes expressed pride in his team’s achievements in Europe despite the disappointment of the loss.

With their European run cut short, West Ham must now turn their attention to securing a top-seven finish in the Premier League to qualify for European competition next season. Moyes reflected on the progress the team has made in recent years, including their three consecutive appearances in European quarter-finals. However, the focus now shifts to domestic success as the Hammers aim to secure a place in Europe through the Premier League. Moyes commended his players for their effort and resilience throughout the European campaign.
