Survey reveals that citizens are concerned about defense and security ahead of EU Parliament elections

The latest edition of the EU Parliament’s Eurobarometer survey revealed that defense and security are now key campaign issues for European Union citizens ahead of the June elections, with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine prompting a significant shift in priorities. The report showed that defense and security now rank third as a priority for EU citizens, behind poverty and social exclusion, and public health. This marks a significant change from sentiments five years ago when these issues were not as prominent in discussions surrounding EU elections.

The study found that over 50 countries are set to go to the polls in 2024, with defense and security emerging as a top concern for citizens in nine countries at a national level. The Eurobarometer also highlighted the importance of reinforcing the EU’s global position through defense and security measures, with citizens ranking this as a top priority ahead of food security and agriculture. Looking towards the next legislative mandate, peace and democracy are considered the main values to defend in the coming years, ahead of the protection of human rights, freedom of speech and thought, and the rule of law.

Peace was identified as the most valued goal in countries like Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Finland, where concerns about Russia’s belligerence towards Ukraine have raised fears of future aggression. The deteriorating relationship between Finland and Russia due to the Nordic country’s membership in NATO and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and related sanctions was also highlighted. The report underlined the surge of interest in the upcoming June elections, with 60% of Europeans expressing interest and 71% indicating that they are likely to cast a ballot. The majority of respondents emphasized the importance of voting in light of the current global situation.

The Eurobarometer survey was conducted between February 7 and March 3 in all 27 EU countries, with a total of 26,411 interviews conducted. The findings suggest a shift in EU citizens’ priorities towards defense and security, driven by recent events such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As the June elections approach, the focus on peace, democracy, and upholding core European values is expected to shape the political discourse and voter turnout. The survey results indicate a growing awareness and engagement among EU citizens, reflecting the evolving political landscape and the impact of external threats on the region’s security and stability.
