2 killed, 3 injured in Russian attacks on Donetsk Oblast

tactic known as a “double-tap” attack is one of the cruelest tactics used by Russia in its wars, particularly in Ukraine. This tactic involves hitting a building, waiting for first responders and the media to arrive, and then hitting the same place again to target those who came to put out the fire, help the victims, or document a potential war crime. This ruthless and illegal tactic has been used by Russia in conflicts to sow fear and confusion among civilians and those providing aid.

The situation in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk Oblast remains dire as Russian troops continue their attacks on several settlements, resulting in casualties and destruction. On April 18, two people were killed and three others were injured in separate attacks in the region. Local authorities reported that settlements in Donetsk Oblast face daily Russian attacks due to their proximity to the front line, with heavy fighting ongoing as Russia seeks to occupy the entire region. The attacks have resulted in significant damage to buildings and infrastructure, with civilians caught in the crossfire and facing danger as a result of the ongoing conflict.

One of the reported incidents on April 18 involved the discovery of a 63-year-old woman’s body under the rubble in Selydove, a town located west of Avdiivka, which is under Russian occupation. Additionally, a 56-year-old man was killed in the village of Ocheretyne and two others were injured in Krasnohorivka due to Russian attacks. The ongoing violence in Donetsk Oblast has forced the regional governor to issue warnings urging residents to evacuate due to the dangerous situation. The relentless attacks by Russian forces have resulted in widespread destruction and loss of life, further escalating the humanitarian crisis in the region.

The intensity of the conflict in Donetsk Oblast has escalated in recent days, with Ukraine’s Defense Ministry reporting a significant increase in Russian attacks on the region. The situation on the eastern front has been described as having “significantly deteriorated” as Russia intensifies its offensive efforts to gain control of the territory. The Defense Ministry reported over 1,800 attacks on Donetsk Oblast in a single day, including missile strikes, highlighting the severity of the ongoing violence and the impact on civilians living in the region. The continued aggression by Russian troops has led to a deepening crisis in the area, with no immediate end in sight to the conflict.

The use of “double-tap” attacks by Russia in its military operations in Ukraine adds to the brutality and inhumanity of the conflict. This tactic not only targets civilians and first responders but also undermines the efforts of humanitarian organizations and media personnel who are working to provide assistance and document the impact of the conflict. The deliberate targeting of those who seek to help others in times of crisis reflects a blatant disregard for international humanitarian law and human rights norms. As the conflict in Donetsk Oblast continues to escalate, the need for international support and attention to the situation becomes increasingly urgent in order to protect civilian lives and uphold basic principles of humanity in times of war.

In the face of ongoing Russian aggression and attacks on civilians in Ukraine’s eastern regions, independent journalism plays a crucial role in documenting the impact of the conflict and holding perpetrators accountable. By supporting independent media outlets covering the situation in Donetsk Oblast and other conflict-affected areas, individuals can contribute to the fight for truth, justice, and transparency in the midst of chaos and violence. The brave work of journalists and media organizations on the ground is essential in shedding light on the atrocities being committed and amplifying the voices of those affected by war. As the conflict in Ukraine continues to devastate communities and disrupt lives, standing in solidarity with independent journalism is a vital step towards building a more informed and compassionate global community.
