Process: BND employee denies espionage – WELT

The trial of a BND official accused of spying for the Russian intelligence agency FSB took place in the Berlin court. The accused denied betraying the BND and his lawyer engaged in a heated exchange with the judge. The importance of the trial for national security was highlighted, with the General Prosecutor charging the BND official and a businessman with serious treason for allegedly spying for the FSB. The BND official had been silent on the accusations for a long time but finally spoke out during the trial, denying any betrayal of the BND.

The accused BND official was accused of providing nine documents from internal BND systems to the FSB, which were then transferred to Moscow by the businessman acting as a courier. The FSB allegedly paid large sums of money for this information, indicating a high value for BND intelligence on the Ukraine war and the Russian Wagner Group. The BND official’s lawyer presented a different version of events, claiming that the money found in a safe belonged to them and was not sent from Moscow. Laughter erupted in the courtroom when it was revealed that the official’s wife had stored a large sum of money in a suitcase in their attic without his knowledge.

During the trial, the BND official and the businessman presented conflicting stories, with one of them clearly lying. The BND official suggested that the documents could have been transferred to Russia in various ways and questioned the businessman’s credibility. The businessman, on the other hand, seemed to find amusement in the official’s defense. The trial is expected to continue for several more months, with further dramatic proceedings anticipated as more evidence is presented and witnesses testify.

The lawyer representing the BND official also raised questions about the credibility of the BND President Bruno Kahl, pointing out apparent contradictions in his statements regarding the severity of the situation. With the trial set to resume on Thursday, more revelations and twists are expected in the courtroom. The outcome of the trial will not only determine the fate of the accused individuals but also have significant implications for national security in Germany. As the legal battle unfolds, the extent of any espionage activities and their consequences will be closely scrutinized by authorities and the public alike.
