Walmart has agreed to pay its customers back for overcharging them for certain items in a recent $45 million settlement of a class action lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges that Walmart’s point-of-sale machines raised the weight of goods when marked at a “Rollback” price, resulting in higher total prices than advertised discounts. Examples of weighted goods include packaged meat, poultry, pork, seafood, and bags of citrus fruits. Walmart has denied any wrongdoing but paid out the settlement to avoid trial. Customers who bought “weighted goods” or “bagged citrus” at Walmart between Oct. 19, 2018, and Jan. 19, 2024, may be eligible to submit a claim.
To be eligible to submit a claim, individuals must have purchased “weighted goods” or “bagged citrus” at Walmart within the specified time frame, regardless of whether they have retained their receipts. Customers can claim different amounts based on the number of items purchased, ranging from $10 for 1 to 50 items to $25 for 101 or more items. Those who retained their receipts can claim 2% of the total cost of the items purchased, up to a limit of $500. If the total amount of claims exceeds the settlement amount, payments may be decreased. The deadline to file a claim is June 5, 2024, and claims can be submitted online or by mail to the settlement website or address provided.
A final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for June 16, 2024, after which eligible payments will be distributed. The process may be delayed by appeals, but updates will be provided as new information becomes available. Customers who think they may be eligible for a claim are encouraged to file by the deadline to receive their payment.
