The IRS is answering the phone more quickly this Tax Day

The IRS is highlighting customer service improvements this tax season, emphasizing the changes made since receiving new funding through the Inflation Reduction Act. These improvements include reduced phone wait times, digitization of documents, and enhancements to the “Where’s My Refund” tool. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen praised the IRS for providing better service to taxpayers when given the resources needed.

IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel acknowledged the massive effort involved in delivering tax season and expressed gratitude for the hard work of IRS staff. Despite the challenges, the agency has processed over 100 million tax returns, with more expected to come in as the deadline approaches. Wait times have been significantly reduced, and the updated online tool provides more specific information about taxpayers’ refunds in plain language.

The IRS is focused on delivering better service to all Americans and increasing scrutiny on complex filers to prevent tax evasion. Major initiatives include targeting high-wealth individuals who do not meet their tax obligations. The implementation of programs such as Direct File, a free electronic tax return filing system, aims to simplify the tax filing process and potentially change how Americans file their taxes. However, threats to IRS funding could jeopardize these efforts.

While the Inflation Reduction Act initially allocated $80 billion to the IRS, House Republicans have successfully reduced that amount. A $1.4 billion cut was included in a debt ceiling and budget cuts package passed last summer, with an additional $20 billion expected to be diverted from the IRS over the next two years. Government watchdogs warn that these funding cuts will lead to a reduction in revenue collection, ultimately increasing the deficit.

Despite the challenges posed by funding cuts, the IRS remains committed to providing efficient and effective service to taxpayers. By increasing operational efficiency and targeting tax evasion, the agency aims to improve the tax system and generate more revenue for the U.S. Treasury. As tax season continues, the IRS will continue to adapt to changing circumstances and prioritize the needs of taxpayers.

Stay informed about the latest developments and changes in tax policies as the IRS works to streamline the tax filing process and ensure compliance with tax laws. With ongoing efforts to enhance customer service and improve tax collection, the IRS is working to fulfill its mission of serving the American public.
