The winners of the Laurence Olivier Awards for 2023 were announced in various categories such as Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Best New Play, Best New Musical, Best Director, and many others. In the Best Actor in a Musical category, Tom Francis won for Sunset Boulevard, while Nicole Scherzinger won Best Actress for the same production. Best New Play went to Dear England by James Graham, while Operation Mincemeat took home the award for Best New Musical. In the supporting role categories, Amy Trigg won Best Actress for The Little Big Things and Jak Malone won Best Actor for Operation Mincemeat.
Among the winners for other categories were Will Close for Best Supporting Actor in Dear England, Haydn Gwynne for Best Supporting Actress for When Winston Went to War With the Wireless, and Kate Trefry for Best New Entertainment or Comedy Play for Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Dinosaur World Live was awarded Best Family Show, while Arlene Phillips with James Cousins won the Gillian Lynne award for best theatre choreographer. Best Costume Design went to Marg Horwell for The Picture of Dorian Gray, while Vanya won Best Revival, and Sunset Boulevard won Best Musical Revival.
In the technical categories, Adam Fisher won Best Sound Design for Sunset Boulevard, and Alan Williams won Outstanding Musical Contribution for Musical Supervision and Musical Direction for the same production. Miriam Buether won Best Set Design for Stranger Things: The First Shadow, Jack Knowles won Best Lighting Design for Sunset Boulevard, and Blue by the English National Opera won Best New Opera Production. Antonio Pappano won Outstanding Achievement in Opera for his role as Musical Director of the Royal Opera House, and Isabela Coracy won Outstanding Achievement in Dance for her performance in NINA: By Whatever Means.
Outstanding Achievement in Affiliate Theatre went to Sleepova by Matilda Feyişayo at the Bush theatre, and the Sir Peter Hall award for best director was shared by Jamie Lloyd for Sunset Boulevard and Sam Mendes for The Motive and the Cue. Overall, the 2023 Laurence Olivier Awards celebrated excellence in the performing arts and recognized outstanding talent in various categories.
